Winter Weather Updates
Updated January 29, 2026, 4:00 p.m.:
LISD Staff and Families,
All LISD schools and offices will resume normal operations and schedules tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 30.
District crews have actively been working over the past couple of days to break up ice in parking lots and transportation centers, treating sidewalks, shaded areas, and high-traffic locations, to prepare campuses for a safe return on Friday.
Buses will run on their normal schedules, and will resume regularly scheduled routes and operations. For families who utilize bus transportation, please be sure you have downloaded the StopFinder app to receive the most up-to-date transportation information as we resume service on Friday.
It is possible for road conditions to vary greatly across LISD which spans 127 square miles. We’re unable to make a decision for just one campus or area of our district, but rather must take into consideration all of the 13 different municipalities our district serves. For that reason, parents are the ultimate decision-makers on whether or not their students will attend school, and should notify the school as they would for any absence if the parent chooses to keep their student home. The district will accommodate absences and tardies accordingly.
Thank you for your patience, understanding and flexibility this week, and we look forward to a day of learning on campus tomorrow.
January 28, 2026, 4:00 p.m.:
Lewisville ISD Families,
Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our students and staff, all LISD campuses and facilities will continue to be closed Thursday, Jan. 29. All extracurricular activities, facility rentals, and campus events scheduled for Thursday will be determined on a case-by-case basis and will be communicated by coaches and/or program directors. At this time, we anticipate a return to normal operations on Friday, Jan. 30.
While temperatures warmed today and some melting occurred, conditions across the district remain uneven. Residential and neighborhood streets, campus parking lots, apartment complexes, and shaded areas continue to have lingering ice. Some areas of the district may see temperatures dip below freezing again tonight, and remaining moisture can refreeze creating potentially hazardous travel. This morning’s refreeze created some of the most hazardous conditions we have seen.
In addition, many LISD students rely on walking routes to campuses or to bus stops, and those paths remain difficult to safely navigate. Bus transportation is also impacted by neighborhood street conditions and access to campuses and transportation centers. While delayed starts are sometimes an option, a two-hour delay would still require many bus routes to begin as early as 7:00 a.m., when refreezing conditions are typically most hazardous. These factors, taken together, led us to extend the closure for Thursday.
Crews are actively working to break up ice in parking lots and transportation centers, treating sidewalks, shaded areas, and high-traffic locations, and continuing to monitor conditions as temperatures change. Our teams will continue these efforts throughout the day on Thursday to prepare campuses for a safe return on Friday.
District Facilities teams are also continuing to closely monitor and respond to campus conditions, and HVAC systems across LISD campuses are fully operational to maintain safe indoor temperatures. Continued community support through bond elections has helped ensure these critical systems are well maintained and ready to serve students during extreme weather.
For families who utilize bus transportation, please be sure you have downloaded the StopFinder app to receive the most up-to-date transportation information as we prepare to resume service on Friday.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we prioritize the safety of our more than 6,000 staff members, and more than 47,000 students.

Lewisville ISD Families,
Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our students and staff, all LISD campuses and facilities will continue to be closed Wednesday, Jan. 28. All extracurricular activities, facility rentals, and campus events scheduled for Wednesday will be canceled or rescheduled.
This decision came after consultation with our Safety & Security and district Facilities teams, and in coordination with surrounding school districts, as well as emergency response agencies and local officials.
While many major roads are beginning to clear, our district spans more than 127 square miles and several of our suburban and rural neighborhoods remain inaccessible. In addition, our staff and families live throughout the DFW region, where road conditions vary widely and many areas are still experiencing significant icing and limited mobility.
Although temperatures are expected to remain above freezing for several hours today, conditions have not made significant progress and any ice that melts today is expected to refreeze overnight, further compounding already hazardous conditions for early bus routes, and families and staff who have an early commute. Temperature forecasts show that even a delayed start on Wednesday would not provide enough time for ice to melt enough to make roads accessible.
District teams are continuing to monitor roadways, and LISD Facilities teams will continue to monitor campus conditions. Throughout the day yesterday and today, our Facilities and Safety & Security teams have been monitoring our schools to assess conditions. Please join us in recognizing the incredibly important role they have in keeping our schools safe for students and staff.
LISD has enough extra instructional minutes to cover one missed day without impacting the school calendar. For the second day, we will use the district’s designated bad weather day scheduled for April 6. The district will submit a waiver to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) for approval for the additional missed minutes. The district will submit a waiver to the Texas Education Agency (TEA) for approval for the additional missed minutes and will provide an update once we know more.
We will continue to monitor road conditions on Wednesday and will update families Wednesday afternoon about Thursday’s schedule. We know extended school closures can be difficult for families and staff, and we appreciate your continued patience and support as we prioritize safety.

Lewisville ISD Families,
Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our students and staff, all LISD campuses and facilities will continue to be closed Tuesday, Jan. 27. All extracurricular activities, facility rentals, and campus events scheduled for Tuesday will be canceled or rescheduled. As a reminder, all LISD campuses and facilities will also be closed Monday, Jan. 26.
While it is not typical to make determinations this early, guidance from the National Weather Service and Denton County Emergency Operations indicates the amount of freezing precipitation our area has received and the prolonged periods of below freezing temperatures are too significant to fully melt until temperatures rise above freezing.
Our district facilities teams are doing a great job monitoring our buildings to ensure that our systems are operating well for staff and students safety for when we return.
If further delays or cancellations are necessary into Wednesday, families will be notified as soon as possible. Stay tuned for additional information.
The district will communicate plans to account for the missed instructional minutes at a later date.
